Uk auto diff problems
Hello, having some problems with the diff on my uk auto, a few weeks ago an oil seal on the drivers side went and lost all the oil. after stripping it the drive pinion bearings were shot and there was a small amount of wear on the pinion gear. after getting it inspected by my local mechanic (the only one i know that knows anything about diffs!) i was advised to replace the 2 bearings, seals and spacers and rebuild it with the slightly worn pinion gear as he thought the wear wasnt that bad.
Turns out he was wrong! the car sounds perfect when accelerating but as soon as you lift off the throttle there is a bad whinning noise. Bassically i have already spent 300+ on bearings and seals and am being quoted 600+ for the pinion gear and crown wheel set and want to know what i should do! Does anyone know where i could get a second hand diff or should i just spend the rest of the money on the diff i have started fixing? |

Bit tricky this. As you say you've already started spending money on the failed diff so to abandon it in search of a second hand diff seems a bit silly, but I think it may be the cheapest option.
You should be able to find a second hand diff for about £300 (give or take) and I think i'd go down that route and then perhaps put your current one away for a rainy day. You're probably going to have to do a bit of searching for a UK diff, but they are out there.

Was thinking that too, tried all the local breakers here before i went down the route of replacing the bearings, but couldnt get anything. think i'll have to take another flick through the yellow pages!

I didn't mean it's been a while since youv'e been on, I meant it's been a while since your car got murdered.
