Can't find any step by step instructions on fixing it i'm afraid. Will check Repair Manual tomorrow.

think half the problem is the shape of the hks induction pipe and filter as its just like a french horn
mine used to be exactly the same until i got wise to how bad the filter filtered the air and junked the kit and fitted an apexi no more mooing and much better filtration.

Thanks for the help. I've heard that my filter isn't the best (after I bought it&#33, might have to look at alternatives. Who knows, might help cure the noise too.

ive seen some filtration tests on the filters below and was quite shocked how bad some were and think it was in this order
hks worst
blitz
k&n
apexi best

but non beating the stock airbox with oe filter

the induction kits look good and thats about it im afraid unless ofcourse your going for bigger hp then at some point the stock airbox wont flow enough air, not sure what hp that is possibly some else here knows.

Chris Wilson mentioned to me that you need to be 600bhp plus to start to get any benefit from an induction kit.

I've got the Blitz SUS kit on my car and I still can't decide whether to fit a standard airbox in place of it. Although the Blitz one is shiny and looks nice it doesn't filter nearly as well as the stock one.

In this vid, 4secs into it, you hear the noise.

Right Click Save As

and 5secs in on this one:

Save as again

It is the reed valve as Martin states and is normal on some cars

Thanks for the samples Peter, although it appears I'm unable to play mp4 files?

As Dunk suggested the shape of the HKS intake might be adding to the problem, I removed it all to have a listen.... Nope just the same, just as loud. I've had this filter for ages, but the noise only started last week. Getting annoyed with it now.... need to look at sorting it out!

Your mooing sound is caused by poor filtration and dirt sticking to the reed plate. I have a uk twin turbo auto and was missold a filter that had an oil based filter fitted. Needless to say my AFM went crazy and had to be replaced by Mr Toyota as they are like rocking horse *hit to find 2nd hand. The oil and dirt this sucked into my engine contaminated the reed plate and it makes the noise whether a filter is fitted or not. I had a HKS filter fitted after this for 12 months but found that the best filter by far was the standard unit as it stopped the hot air going in and after 5-6 months the previously loud cow under the bonnet ceased to exist.

My local Supra authorised Toyota shop recommended spraying a carb cleaner up the pipe in full flow and running the engine at a standstill to try and dislodge the oil and crap previously sucked in. Hope this helps

Thanks for letting me know your experience of this problem. ?Pardon my ignorance, but AFM? ?Actually, the noise did seem to get louder after I had driven in a particularly dusty environment.... sounds like this may be the cause then.

Looks like a cleaning of the reed valve is in order.... should be fun as I know absolutely nothing about it!! only one way to learn I suppose! (hope everything still works afterwards&#33 unless I try the carb cleaner idea??

I may look at changing the filter too, although I don't think I have the standard air box anywhere.

Any suggestions anyone, from experience, on what filter to go for?

AFM - Air flow meter. Only found on UK cars. Costs 500 to replace and can only work with "dry" air filters". Dont ever use of those cheap shoddy re-oil kit filters that you can buy. They may be fine for jap imports but the oil sticks to the sensor and causes it to fail!
