Which belts are most prone to squeaking and what can be done about shutting them up?

Matt, I'm assuming you mean squeeling (sp)? It can be caused by a belt slipping or worse case your water pump is on the way out, which sometimes can make a racket. Try spraying some grease behind the centre of the pulley wheels which the belts run on as they can sometimes run a little dry. Just be a tad carefull not to get any greese on the belts or the inner pulley which the belts run on.
Check your belts for cracking which is usually a sign of a belt passed it's best. They dry out and in some cases can slip, which again could be the cause of the symptems you describe. Always best to try the simple things firstly. Not sure if any particular belt is more prone to this or not?

I've been getting a slight squeak/squeal during warm up on very cold mornings, could this be the same prob?? On closer inspection it does sound like it's coming from the pulley area!

The squeaking on mine does happen when I've just start the engine. But it's doing it pretty good once I've been driving for 10 mins. I shall try to take a look this weekend and see if something can be done.

There's only two belts on the MKIV, the cam belt and the auxilary drive belt (fan belt).
As the guys have said above check the tensioner and various other pulleys, but also make sure the belt is running true and not off to one side on any of the pulleys. Pay particular attention to the bottom crank pulley as it has been known for some to fall apart and this can start with funny sounds coming from the belt. Tried to find some pics of a broken crank pulley but i don't seem to have any.
