I have owned a Mk1V TT (UK) for two years and teat it very carefully. I was pulling out of the car park a week ago to drive half a mile to get lunch (14:30) and fill up. Gave the throttle a little (honest) dab as I puuled out as a car was approaching (about 80 yards away - no huge urgency).
Car then went berserk. Turned 180 degrees counter-clockwise skidded sideways for 25 yards, mounted kerb, demolished small silver birch and came to rest with front offside wheel having over 8ft ditch. Total distance covered about 65 yards.
Note:
1. Traction control was OFF
2. Road was completely dry
3. Coldish day - about 38-40F

Question:

Was it driver error? If so, how did I do it?!? This has never happened before - I had absolutely no control of the car after I pulled out.

All help appreciated!!

Richard,

Exactly the same happened to my mate in Biggin Hill (South London), He was not throttling with the car at the time. Suddenly lost control and now car is a write off. he got the money back though....
BUT his tyres I know were worn down a bit. I have been told by my mechanic that you should have the same tyre thread on each axle. This helps with TC. Like to know if this is a true statement from you experts out there.
BTW is your car a writeoff>?

Thanks for your input. Yes, the tyres are worn. Legal but towards the end of their life. Somebody else has mentioned that the tyres were also cold and cold tyres don't grip as well as warm. So it could be that worn + cold + throttle dab = violent spin!

Unfortunately i think that could well be the correct conclusion.

Welcome to the BBS and RWD both require respect lol

There is a world of difference between good tyres and bad (brands etc)
