Looks for me like I'll have to get the TRD LSD, as the Torsen (standard diff) seems to be twice the price, roughly 2000 euros.
My diff developed a leak on the lines to the cooler, the 'DIFF OIL' came on on when I was on the highway, and I quite literally ground to a halt on the help lane only a few seconds later. In the mean time, I have sent emails to parts@trdracing.com to ask about the TRD LSD, and only got very short replies (from parts@toyotaworld.com, strangely enough). Here's a few quotes from the (fast) replies: "The Trd Diff. is much stronger than the stock unit" "Will handle more torque and horsepower" "The stock Torsen diff. uses parallel axis helical gears and the TRD unit uses clutch plates." (Yes, that's a Torsen diff ...) "Special order from Japan is 873.00 sale price retail is 1090.00 and it will take 3 months to get in" (That should be USD. And ouch, that takes too long - see if I can get it anywhere else) My next email got the following answers: "Torque /hp can the stock LSD take about 750 the TRD LSD take over 1000" "The TRD diff. is made for off road racing" And a few links I found in the mean time: http://www.autozine.org/technical_sc...tion_4wd_2.htm and http://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential8.htm (with the Torsen diff on http://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential10.htm). The Torsen diff seems to have technical advantages (reacts faster, no interference with ABS) and a higher price (double). Last edited by wlamee; 3rd August 2006 at 01:23 PM. |

Wlamee, don't forget the TRD diff re-uses the stock diff casing. It's not just a case in-out & off you drive. The pre-load & back lash needs to be set up properly & needs experience some mechanics wont neccessarily have.
I have been looking into this recently & trying to decide whether it'll be cheaper to get my stock unit rebuilt rather than buy a TRD one. There seems to be bugger all 2nd hand diffs about at the mo, which would be my preference.
