MartinF,

Thanks for your helpful links.

Ive had a look and it seems like there are two models, the GE and the GTE am i right?

The GE only calls for a GL5 rated 75w-90, you could use a semisynthetic like the Fuchs Titan gear 75w-90 or upgrade to the fully synthetic Silkolene Syn 5 75w-90.

The GTE is the one that calls for the V160. I am unsure of what the V160 actually is at the moment but I will talk to the technical team and see if there are any alternative oils out there that meet the same spec.

Cheers

Guy.

Apologies, the GE is the non-turbo car and the GTE the turbo car. The non-turbo car uses a well established 5 speed box (however later ones had a V161 six speed option).

V160 is just the Toyota (possibly Getrag as well) designation for the box, but they also use this for their matching oil.

Oilman,

Some good posting/reading which if you don?t mind adding some more please.

In your response to Wez, is the Valvoline SynPower 5W-50 a good oil?

This doesn?t seem to be an oil that you offer but are you able/willing to specifically answer the following questions and any that maybe relevant in stating how good/bad this oil is and your recommended alternative rather than a general American oil over view?

I?ve had a quick read of your posts and hopefully picked out the important things in choicing an oil.

1. Is it (Valvoline) HC, MC or Syntethic (+type of base stock)?
2. How does it cope with breaking down?
3. Viscosity improvers and...
4. Why aren?t they required for American engines compared all the other engines?
5. You say the American oils are dearer ? presume this to be transport costs compared to the continent?
6. Your view of Valvoline.
7. Alternitives

Hope I?ve made some sort of sence.

I?ve got a stock 6sp TT VVTi by the way and would be happy to consider something else with a bit of technical support behind it rather than just follow the crowd.

Many thanks
Stephen V

Stephen,

Here we go;

1. Is it (Valvoline) HC, MC or Syntethic (+type of base stock)?

Very hard to tell, have looked at their site and they claim synthetic. Only a chemical test will tell.(we are having one done).

2. How does it cope with breaking down?

If it is what they say it is, it will be very strong but only for a short while due to the VI problem.

3. Viscosity improvers and...

Just not readily available in the US.

4. Why aren?t they required for American engines compared all the other engines?

Think about US cars and roads. Big engines that never work hard. Troll around at 55 mainly.

5. You say the American oils are dearer ? presume this to be transport costs compared to the continent?

Yes, and they are generally over priced.

6. Your view of Valvoline.

Again without the correct data its hard to tell, hence the chemical test. You could do better though in my opinion.

7. Alternitives

It has to be the Silkolen Pro R and Pro S range or Mobil 1. these are ester/PAO based synthetics that really are at the top the game.

Hope this helps.

Guy.

Hi Oilman, just after a reccomendation, I have '94 uk spec 6 sp supra tt, with an uprated intercooler, new radiator and a mocal 16 row oil cooler, not used on track days but sees bursts of hard driving with fairly regular high speed runs. I also have a boost controller set to 1.15 bar. The car has 105k miles on it and is running fine. At my last oil change (500 miles ago) I thought i'd give millers 10w60 a go instead of the valvoline synpower 5w50.

I went with the heavier oil as it has been noticed by other members with higher mileage cars that it can eliminate the occaisional puff of smoke on start up if the car has'nt been driven for a week or so. The supra is known to do this due to the valve stem seals wearing.

I'm now a little concerned after reading your comments about going up 2 grades to 60, I thought the higher number would be better for higher temps and hence a better summer oil.

I'd appreciate if you would pm me the costs of your reccommended oil for my requirements.
