Yes you need heat proof paint for the hubs. Done my UK spec hubs a couple of weeks back for when my new wheels turn up and I used Halfords VHT (Very High Temperature) silver paint and they've come up really well. Could post pics tomorrow if you want.

I used Hammerite smooth silver, costs less than a fiver.
Done them last year. Other than the golding on the vents from an E-stop the only thing that burnt it off was braking in new handbrake shoes.

flyn i have got two engine cover sets which you can have one so take your pic fella free of charge i can give them to dunk for you to pic at jae if you like fella

Do I have to wire brush the rusty bits first? Do I apply the paint with a brush? (I shall seek advice from Cass if I do

Yes to both, and try not to get any on the contact surface but if you do you can just wipe it off.

I got a bit on the contact surface I found putting the brakes on got it off right away and you get a good clean edge this way.

That may be, but it's not ideal to have any contaminants on your contact surface.

One of the reasons a lot of places used to tell you to wipe your new disks down with some petrol or brake cleaner before you fitted them was because they had oil on them so that they didn't rust in storage.

I cleaned the storage oil off with spirits.
Dried on Hammerite cuts off well and leaves no after effect.
Point to note is as it is only paint, the first day or so you will notice a bit of a smell radiating off the hubs.
