£1150 is a bit on the high side IMO. I was trying to sell a UK spec one for about £900 (with 70k on) about 2 - 3yrs ago.

I think £1150 would be more like the price for what you thought you were getting. Will he not negotiate on the price now that you have it with you?

If he'd refund about £250 (preferably more) then i'd say just stick with it to save yourself any more hassle.

All IMO.

Thats exactly what I said, but he is on very tight margins and won't make any profit...... etc. Bless!!

To be honest I would rather walk away from a bad deal than try to make it good and the engine, while visually sound, looks a lot higher mileage than 30K.

The company selling it apparently strip it, skim the head, replace the HG and check the crank and cams as standard. Seeing the amount of effort required to remove the cam covers I would doubt that massively, so that brings the whole thing into question. Besides I wanted an unmolested engine as who knows what some scrappy grease monkey could have bu**ered up if it has apart.

I'm looking at another bare engine with a company I trust today, so hopefuly this won't take long to sort.

I think in that case (as you say) walk away, especially if it has been opened.

Default Update

Well after a lot of work and checking things are progressing:

1. Replace Engine. New engine should be arriving today or first thing tomorrow.

2-3. Rewire Dash and replace Dash Panels. I have now re-wired my Dashboard, tidied up all the wiring, made all connections good, fitted a UK Speedo Face and installed a Kenwood Head-Unit with a cubby hole below it. Once I get my foglight switch and the stainless auxiliary warning panels from Thor the whole dash can go back together. Pics below.

4. Fog Lights. Foglights have been re-wired to Pete Bett's diagram (plus resistors). Eveything still works fine and I now have a working bulb blown warning (Thought the resistors weren't working until I realised one of the bulbs had actually blown!!). I am getting stainless warning light panels made by Thor which have the foglight indicator on as well. Once I get those and the UK switch I can wire that in and finish the dash. Pics again below.

PS - can someone with a UK spec try and tell me, or photograph, the pin-outs on the UK rear fog switch as it will save me masses of time and fuses if I know what goes where.

5. Strip and Clean Interior. Did the carpet today. No real problems and I'm up a Japanese parking ticket, 1 Yen and a sweet. I'm currently trying to dry it after cleaning it. Piccies below. I'll add ones of the dried carpet when I can.

All in all a satisfying few days and as I'm now on leave I can throw loads of time into all the other niggles too.

How does the carpet look now it's cleaned? Does it look like new?

So far it's come up much cleaner, but there's still areas that were faded by sunlight and some stubborn marks too. It's still drying out, but I'll get the steam cleaner on it tomorrow and give it another good going over, as well as using some specialist carpet cleaner. All I've used so far is Morrisons own brand washing powder to get the worst off.

I'm also going to see if there's any grey dye I could use to re-colour it. I was going to go black, but I think it'd make it too sombre inside. Plus I have beige floor-mats.

I'll post pics up of the finished result.

PS - Beware the amount of water that this thing soaks up - I managed to flood my in-laws shed when I hung it up initially!

Mine looks like someone has been making coffee in it. It really really needs removing and cleaning.

My worry is that it shrinks during the cleaning process.

It can't shrink. It's moulded onto a plastic/rubber backing which retains the correct shape. It's not too bad to get out, so long as you're happy with dismantling your centre-console a bit and putting some effort in with a socket wrench. Plus I've stripped out my old stock Amp, which has saved some space and weight.

Once I've got it out and had a look I'll let you know. It depends if there's further wear, as I suspect, or not.
