Carpet cleaned and re-fitted. Pic after cleaning attached. It has made a big difference and would be even better re-dyed grey, but the only dye I could find was for 6 litres minimum , which would have left a huge excess.

On to other news -

Good news - my new engine arrived today and it looks exactly as was promised, so the great swap will be starting in the next few days.

Bad News - I have found more wiring of the wrap two bare wires together variety - the shared live and ground wires for the Alarm unit. These must have touched each other recently and blown the unit. New Thatcham Cat 1 alarm for me tomorrow - deep joy!!

That carpet is looking very clean mate. Nice work.

I'd love to do that myself sometime.

It even smells nice now, which, having been owned by a smoker before me makes quite a difference.

Will try and do this for you at the weekend if no reply by then. Unfortunately I don't think I will be able to dig out wiring diagrams for the OEM UK fogs as i've never actually come across a UK electrical manual and we are the only country that had them as OEM.

How did you go about cleaning the carpet, looks like it has come up very well.

As for bare wires twisted together, the perpetrator should be

Cheers Martin, my main worry is trial and error with wiring isn't really best practice, so I'd like to avoid it if possible.

Carpet was washed with a hose, normal washing powder and a lot of scrubbing followed by a steam-clean. If anyone tries it then I'd recommend using a basin of very hot water instead, as the powder was a bit sluggish with cold. If you have a very understanding partner the bath would be ideal.

Reference wiring monkey - he's just wasted £300 ish of my money when I'm already skint!!

Well the foglight switch arrived this morning and after three fuses and a lot of guesswork I worked out what went where and wired it in.

I now have a switch that backlights green when the car's lights are turned on and when pressed turns on the fogs and a telltale on the dash.

A little bit compulsive I know, but I was quite chuffed to get it working!

Default Engine Change Commences

Well over the next few days the new engine will be going in.

Before it does I have a quick question. On the new engine the two places where the BOV piping connects are blanked off. Anyone know why and can I just put my existing BOV on in their place, or has it been done for a reason?

Pics below.

I'm not sure but it could of had the bov up by the throttle plate which I believe is the best place for it. If so then the original bov holes would need to be blanked off. So you should be fine putting your stock bov back in its place.

As Stephen says, most likely had an aftermarket BOV on it previously. Just remove the blanking caps and fit your old one.

Whilst your doing that just check your BOV is OK, if you can blow through either of the big hoses then it's ducked.
