Stay door!
I just thought I'd share something I'd done.
A few years back I looked into replacing the door check straps/stays whatever you call them, basically the plastic arms that hold the door open, or not in my case. I enquired at Toyota about these and suffered a cardiac when they told me they were £52 each. Anyway, I passed on buying them and have suffered with the self closing doors ever since. The other week while rebuilding my car, after having both sides painted. The car was parked nose up on a familiar drive and the door kept trying to close, while I was fitting the door handles. My friend said other than buying new you could try crushing them in a vice..... Sounds scary I know! Anyway I thought it was worth a go, so that's what we did. Basically remove the unit and place the metal section that sits inside the door, containing the rubber blocks that have worn over time in the vice and tighten the vice crushing the unit a little and refit. Now they work like new, there is nothing unsightly on show and you save £104. I thought I'd share this as I'm sure I can't be the only one who suffers this. |

Nope Kev I didn't.
But..... This is not a strap off a Supra but similar, design is the same. The blue bit is obviously the vice, if your vice is small and wimpy with like a 20cm bar tighten it as hard as you can with hand less if your vice is macho. your looking to lightly compress the casing that houses the rubber blocks but don't squash it so much that you distort the screw position. If in doubt give it a squeeze and refit, if it's good your done if not give it some more. Since I done this on mine you can positively feel it pull into the middle and end notch. |

There's really nothing to it Barney, in fact the hard part of the job is stripping the door.
