I've just realised that there is a Machine Mart in Docklands. So when I know all the things I need I might wander over there in my lunch hour and do some shopping.

Default Tools and stuff

I'm trying to make a list of the things I'm going to need, feel free to add...
  • Oil Filter Claw Wrench
  • Oil (Silkolene Pro s 5w40)
  • Filter (Toyota part no. 90915 - 20004)
  • Jack & Axle Stands
  • Sump Plug washer (Toyota part no. 90430-12031)
  • Something to put the old engine oil in (Washing up bowl, Old Oil Container, etc)
  • Extension(s) for wrench to reach Oil Filter Claw Wrench (need 12"s worth)
  • A wrench to fit the Oil Filter Claw Wrench (via extension)
  • Latex Gloves
  • Rags to mop up oil spills

Does everyone else agree with the choice of oil?

Sump plug washer part number is 90430-12031

I'd also buy some latex gloves if you don't have any as oil is supposedly a carciogen. Whether it is or isn't wearing a pair of gloves will just make clearing up easier for you.

Also some rags to lay under the filter area as you undo it, as oil will weep out and end up on your drive if you don't have something to catch it.

I use an old washing up bowl to catch the oil in, just an idea in case you have one kicking around.

I'd be happy with that oil.

Thanks Martin. I've updated my list above.

How long do you let the oil drain for to get all the old out?

It will drain until its a trickle, and then be dripping, thats the time to put the plug back in.

Another piece of advice, if its windy at all make sure you lay some rags around your collecting tub as when its only a trickle the damn wind tends to blow the trickle past the edge of the tub AMHIK

sealy do a oil container, i think it holds about 6-7 ls of waste oil, theres an indent in the top face with a small screw in plug, just take the plug out, put container under sump and let the oil drain into it, then screw the plug in to seal and to empty there is a larger cap on the end which screws off and allows u 2 pour the oil out. i got one because i was sick of open containers of oil around the garage, rem you cant just dump it down the drain and its hard to transport if it has no lid, trust me, get one, their great.

If your going to be purchasing from Opie Oiles, id speak to him first. he will do you a reccomendation for the oil to use dependant on how you use the car, mods, age and milage. he may reccomend a different viscosity for your style of driving etc.

I use a pair of filter 'grips' from halfords, these have worked best for me. However I've used a washing up glove (mock ye not) to undo a particularly stubborn filter before.
For the old oil I use an purpose made 'catch container' which you lay on it's side & it catches the oil which drains into a hole in the centre, again from halfords for about ?5. I then transfer it back into the container from the new oil.
