Strange rattle...
As the title says, my car has developed a strange rattle.
The rattle occurs when you accelerate, starts at around 2,500 to 3000 rpms (the point when the turbos spool up) also if you are pulling revs like above. E.g. the other day I shifted into 2nd at 40/50mph without foot on gas the noise was audible. Liquid levels are fine and the car drives as normal, could this be wear on the turbo shaft or something more serious??? Idle off throttle in Drive gear the car is fine with only the injectors noticeable when idle and exhaust and road noise when in motion... As usual. The noise is like the the old playing card in the bicycle spokes rattle, except more metallic and less spokes. |

Noises are notoriously hard to diagnose over the internet
It could be many things, but as you say the car is driving fine then I suspect it's nothing related to the turbos. There is sometimes an issue with the arm on the EGCV valve breaking and the internal flap would then be free to rattle around, but that would effect spool up of the turbos. Are you able to tell what area it is coming from at all? Tried driving with alternate front windows open to see if it's closer to the left or the right of the car.

Windows don't help, all you hear is exhaust.
The noise is heard through the bulkhead and with my dash panels out, very noticeable. The rattle gets faster the more you rev and mostly only under load. If I try to simulate it in park it requires 3000+ revs. As it is not audible at idle and hard to simulate out of drive, I was leaning towards turbo or gearbox... |

It could be the heat shield right on top of the turbo's. The bolt holes on it tend to rust quite easily.

Ok, I'm leaning away from the turbo's. It's more related to the rpm the engine is turning out.
If I put it in 2nd and drive it up into the 2 to 3k range the rattle is there, the faster I go the faster and louder the rattle gets. I tried to make a recording with my phone, but it's like the Lex Luthor message to Superman and the phone didn't pick it up... ? So I'm thinking drive shaft, gearbox or if I'm lucky (for a change) exhaust heat shield. ...Wait a minute. I seem to recall putting a metal clip on the cat casing to hold two pieces of metal together before.... |

Not yet Martin, it will require getting under the car to check the pipe and I've just not got round to it.

Update:
Had my friend have a listen, he says it's not external, sounds like pinging/pinking...? Are there any common causes of this in our cars, where to start looking...? |

It's not really common with our cars particularly in stock configurations like BPU. If that's definitely what it is I'd start by changing the plugs.
