Default Aerial winding

My electric aerial started playing up today. It will extend to it's max then the gear will keep going for about 10 seconds as the ariel is at max the gear is no longer in contact with anything and so it makes a horendous free wheeling noise.
When you switch off and it retracts you get 1 second of free wheeling and noise then the gears connect and the aerial goes down normally.

Question: Is there a sensor or something that tells the winding gear when the aerial is fully extended and that it should shut down?

I would have thought there is some sort of end stop switch but i'm not really that familiar with the internal workings of our aerials.

I'll have to pull it apart then.
At the moment I've disconected the power to it so it's permenantly down, strange thing is; I think the reception is better.

Update:

I took the unit apart today at first I couldn't see anything wrong.
The internals are made up of a toothed length strip of plastic, which is attached to the tip of the aerial and coils back inside the drum. When activated the motor drives the cog that drives the toothed strip of plastic and unwinds it pushing the aerial up and vice versa.
Upon extending the aerial and hearing the grinding I disconnected it and took it apart.
It was at this point I noticed about four inches of the toothed length were still coiled in the drum and detached from the rest, so the grinding is caused by the aerial never reaching max extension thus the cog never sees a resistance and keeps spinning until the motor times out.

So conclusion is..... It's knackered and I'll need to source another.

The mast with the toothed cable is available as a seperate piece, and by all accounts not too expensive.

I'm sure I paid in the region of 35 of HM's finest for one of these. Never got round to fitting it either so happy to take an offer...

Cheers Mo, I don't know why I bother with the thing, the reception is no better with it up.
But it wasn't made to be broken and so I'm fixing it.

Update:
Part arrived today, cheers Mo.
Old one is in the shed, new one is on the car. The new one stands straighter than the original, old one used to lean over the car and if the aerial was up you couldn't shut the boot without physically moving the top out the way.
For some reason Toyota decided to coil the plastic strip backwards on the card to the way it sits in the housing. Hopefully this won't cause it any stress. But for the moment all's good!
